The Swiss Riviera

Ticino is a rather unique part of Switzerland. Here, you’re far more likely to find yourself sipping cocktails by the water than tucking into a fondue by the piste. Tucked away in the foothills of the Alps, it is Switzerland’s Italian-speaking, sonnenstubbe(which is German for ‘sun terrace’). And if you’re ever lucky enough to visit this hidden gem, you’ll soon come to realise that an Italian influence extends far beyond the language.

The town of Ascona overlooking Lake Maggiore

Ticino was historically a contested region with the Swiss Confederacy eventually winning out over the Duchy of Milan. Today, Ticino benefits from an unmistakably Italian flair combined with the kind of quality that Switzerland has become known for. With stunning mountainous backdrops, palm trees dotted along lakeside promenades and sunnier climes than the rest of Switzerland, ‘La Dolce Vita’ really is the order of the day in Ticino.

Whilst Switzerland may be a land-locked country, that’s not to say there are a lack of options for a refreshing dip. From the beautiful shores of Lake Maggiore to the crystal-clear waters at Ponte dei Salti, there’s such a huge range of freshwater lakes and rivers that you’ll hardly notice the absence of the seaside. If wild swimming isn’t your thing, have no fear because lidos are a central part of life in the canton. The region has over thirty lidos catering to all ages and are a key fixture of a Ticinese summer.

But for those who prefer to soak up the local culture and history rather than lounge by the pool, Ticino has a lot to offer. The canton is home to two of Switzerland’s UNESCO World Heritage sites: The Three Castles of Bellinzona, which are some of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, and Monte San Giorgio, the site of a hugely significant discovery of marine life from the Triassic period. Beyond this, there is a vibrant arts scene with six contemporary art museums, a few foundations, more than fifty galleries and an internationally-renowned art fair.

And for the adrenaline-seekers, the canton certainly doesn’t fail to impress. With exhilarating white-water rafting, speedy jet-boat rides and hair-raising ziplines, Ticino has plenty to offer. One notable experience is the 007 GoldenEye bungee jump. The jump, which was made famous from the opening scene of James Bond’s GoldenEye and voted as the best movie stunt of all time in a 2002 poll, is the world’s highest bungee jump from a fixed structure!

So, if you’re looking to try some place new for next year’s summer holiday, why not try Ticino? Gorgeous weather, stunning views and plenty to keep you occupied (or not, as the case may be for those hoping to sleep by the pool…).
