The Treno Gottardo is a scenic rail journey connecting Zurich and Lucerne with Locarno in southern Switzerland. Travelling along the historic Gotthard panoramic route, the journey takes you from the cities and lakes of German-speaking Switzerland through the heart of the Alps to the Mediterranean landscapes of Ticino. Departures can also be arranged from Basel if desired.
Rather than using the modern Gotthard Base Tunnel, the Treno Gottardo follows the classic mountain railway towards Göschenen and through the original Gotthard Tunnel, opened in 1882. Along the way, ingenious spiral tunnels allow the train to gain height through the mountains, with the famous church of Wassen appearing from three different angles before the journey continues through the Gotthard massif to Airolo.
Descending through the Leventina Valley, the scenery gradually changes from rugged Alpine peaks to the warmer landscapes of southern Switzerland. Travel past Bellinzona and its UNESCO-listed castles before arriving in Locarno, where palm trees, Lake Maggiore and Italian-speaking Switzerland provide a striking contrast to the mountains of the Gotthard. With panoramic windows, comfortable modern trains and year-round services, the Treno Gottardo is a relaxed way to experience one of Switzerland's most historic railway routes.
