The Gornergrat Railway is one of Switzerland's most iconic mountain railways, carrying visitors from Zermatt to the summit of Gornergrat at 3,089 metres. Europe's highest open-air cogwheel railway climbs through forests and Alpine landscapes before emerging above the treeline to reveal spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. For the best views of the Matterhorn, sit on the right side of the train on your way up, and the left side on your way down.
At the summit, enjoy an extraordinary panorama of 29 peaks above 4,000 metres, with the Matterhorn taking centre stage. Gornergrat is also an excellent starting point for scenic walks, with the freedom to hop on and off the railway at intermediate stations to explore the mountains around Zermatt at your own pace. Winter brings snow-covered landscapes and the popular toboggan run from Rotenboden to Riffelberg - one of the highest sledging routes in the Alps.
Operating since 1898, the Gornergrat Railway combines more than a century of mountain heritage with modern panoramic carriages, creating one of Switzerland's most iconic railway experiences.
