The Furka Steam Railway is one of Switzerland's most remarkable heritage rail journeys, combining beautifully restored steam locomotives with some of the country's most dramatic Alpine scenery. Running between Realp in Uri and Oberwald in Valais, this historic cogwheel railway climbs to 2,160 metres above sea level, making it the second-highest rail crossing in the Alps after the Bernina Express.
As the train winds through remote mountain landscapes, across bridges and past deep gorges, you'll experience a route that most modern travellers now bypass via the Furka Base Tunnel. A short stop at Furka station offers the chance to stretch your legs and soak up the spectacular surroundings before continuing your journey.
Lovingly restored by dedicated volunteers, the century-old steam locomotives and vintage carriages recreate the golden age of mountain rail travel.
