Since 1892, these beautifully preserved steam locomotives have been climbing from Brienz to the summit of Brienz Rothorn, filling the mountain air with the unmistakable sights, sounds and scent of a bygone era.
As the train steadily ascends to 2,350 metres, it passes through forests, alpine meadows and rugged mountain scenery, revealing increasingly spectacular views over turquoise Lake Brienz and the surrounding Bernese Oberland. Every journey is powered by steam, making this one of the last daily-operating steam cogwheel railways in Europe.
At the summit, enjoy panoramic views stretching towards the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, relax at the mountain restaurant or set off on one of the scenic hiking trails. Combining living railway heritage with magnificent Alpine scenery, the Brienz Rothorn Railway offers a wonderfully authentic Swiss mountain experience.
